Recruiting Child Soldiers as a “Cultural Norm”

In their article “No Place to Hide: Refugees, Displaced Persons and the Recruitment of Child Soldiers,” Achvarina and Reich report that the Taliban currently recruits children as insurgents and possible suicide bombers. Insurgent forces in Afghanistan have conscripted as many as 8,000 children. They defend their choice by claiming that child soldiers are a cultural norm because a male is considered a man at the age of 14.

Child Soldiers as Servants

Some children are directed away from the front lines and are given menial tasks that higher-ranking officers are not willing to perform. The children’s tasks include fetching water, cleaning, cooking, and washing clothes. This frees up the older soldiers so that they can strategize and plan their next attack.
